Default paper source refusing to stay put

I have found numerous articles on this issue but nothing has seemed to
be a permanent fix.

A client of mine has Word 2003. Just updated to all the latest service
packs just to be sure there was no existing fix already.

For a while she was having no trouble but one day documents started
defaulting to manual feed tray - not only that but her printer was
telling her to press the stop button repeatedly after each page.

First of all, she wanted to use the default (bottom) paper tray.
I checked all of the settings and set the page defaults to Tray 1 for
Letter both in the driver and in the printer's internal defaults.

This is a Samsung laser printer, which is shared on the network.

After changing the default paper sources and saving those settings to
normal.dot, new documents are actually fine.

However, old documents she opens are defaulted to manual feeder and it
even refers to it as "Default (manual feeder)" which is odd, because
although a Word document retains printing settings, why would it refer
to the manual feeder as the default - isn't that a printer/driver
setting?

In addition to that, any Word documents she receives by email, when
she opens them they're all doing the same thing - defaulting to manual
feeder.

NOT ONE SINGLE OTHER APPLICATION has this problem - it is exclusively
Word 2003.

Like I stated before, I've done a lot of searching but the only
suggestions I have found are what I've done already.

Is there no way to setup a configuration whereby it will revert to the
default bottom tray (or, more specifically, that it should rever to
whatever is the current default) whenever any document is opened? In
other words, tell Word NOT to save the paper source within the
document, simply use whatever the driver is setup for. That would be
ideal, at least for now.

She needs to click on the Properties button next to where the printer is
selected in the File>Print dialog and set the tray, etc there.

The paper source setting saved in existing documents is not going to change
when you change the settings in Normal.dot; that will have to be done in
each individual document. As for documents received in email, unless they
have the default Default setting saved in them, there's no telling what
they'll do.
