Discussion:
Certain symbols don't print

Greetings.

I have an interesting problem. When Word documents are printed to a
certain printer, some special characters don't print. (Things like list
bullets, the +- symbol, the degree symbol, etc.) If the exact same
document is sent to a different printer, all these things do print
exactly as they appear on the screen.

Anybody have any suggestions as to what the problem is? (Or more
importantly, what I might try to make it go away...)

If the printer in question is using a resident font and it doesn't include
those symbols...

I didn't think printers had resident fonts any more - I thought the
computer just sends everything as bitmaps...

Is there a way to tell Word to send everything as raw bitmaps? That way
(presumably) the printout can't possibly be different to what Word
thinks it will be.

Explore your printer Properties. Usually there is a setting to download the
fonts as bitmaps or "soft fonts."

Alas, this is the very first thing I tried. (Before posting here.)
Unfortunately, the printer in question is an inkjet, and the driver
seems to expose no useful settings.

I think (almost) all inkjets use downloaded fonts, so I'm not sure what the
problem could be.

OK. Well I guess I'll have to tell the guy to just use the laser printer
instead. Would just be nice to figure out what the problem is, that's all...

Please let us know the make and model of the printer, the source of the
printer driver (From the Windows CD, from a CD or floppy set provided by
the printer maker, the maker's web or FTP site, other web or FTP site).

Most inkjets print "as graphics". However, there are a few with fonts
resident in printer ROM.

Does this problem afflict every font specified in every document sent to
this particular printer?
