Discussion:
Unwanted fonts

XP Home SP2 + updates here. I see a number of new fonts from MS --
Strangleo Edessa, etc. I would like to move them out of my fonts
folder into an archive, so that they won't show up in my applications
unless I specifically want them. When I try to move them, Windows
immediately recreates a copy in the Fonts folder again. :-(

Any work-around?

Have you tried copying them to another folder and then uninstalling them
from the Fonts folder?

Windows won't let you do that with certain unwanted fonts, like Che
Dotum. I posted about that a couple of years ago, but I'm not sure in
which group. Turning off East Asian support in Regional Settings did
not help.

"Estrangelo Edessa " is a script for writing Syriac, a dialect of
Aramaic. It is part of the Unicode support for various languages. As
such, I suspect it is one of the files the system "protects". MS
typography continually evaluates language coverage requirements and
issues such updates from time-to-time.

There might be a way to keep the system from doing that but I would not
recommend that you try. I suggest you just cross your arms and mutter ten
times to yourself softly, "The system knows best" or your own improvised
words. A nice cup of tea or other liquid might calm your frayed nerves.
;-)

All the best.

Thank you Suzanne and Tom,

Oh, but I must persist! I work in several languages, including a few
endangered ones; I want the fonts I want and not the others. I
haven't had the time lately to read in Aramaic.

Will have the cup of tea, thank you kindly, and be back at this
tomorrow. Cheers!
