Discussion:
Letters missing in watermark

Strange indeed, but the first time I've used this.

Using Word 2000 (V10) in XP Pro:

I select "DRAFT" as the watermark. Print preview shows the whole word
"DRAFT."

But when I print (I tried on my laserjet 5 and office jet 500), some
letters are missing, so it prints as "_R_F_" or "_RA_T" (I add the
underscores here, on the document it's just a blank space). Each
printing has a different subset of all the letters, but so far,
no more than 3 of 5 letters.

It does not matter what options I use; a change of font type, font
size, horizontal orientation. All of these result in the same problem.

In Word 2002 and above, the problem has reportedly been solved by clearing
the "Semitransparent" check box in the Format | Background | Printed
Watermark dialog. If you can find a similar setting for your watermark,
perhaps that will work for Word 2000 as well. Or it may be that you have
Word 2002 (since Word 10 is Word 2002; Word 2000 = 9).

I have been looking through the registry for the keys that
control semi transparancy settings for Word. Does anyone
know what keys these are? A number of users in my shop
are using word documents with the very same watermarks and
having the very same problems, yet instead of unchecking
semi transparent each time they want to print the document
they want this handled automatically. I fond nothing in
Word that will allow me to disable this by default. I
might create new templates for them bu t only if I am sure
there is no other way to work around this.
Thanks.
