Clear DayHI!
We are experiencing some sort of difference in Arial font when using our applications build in visual fox pro-9 in different operating systems. we have tested our applications in both windows XP and windows VISTA operating systems.
Letters like O, H (Arial font) seems to be different in appearance.
(width is smaller in characters like H,O in winwows VISTA)
Please advise what may be going wrong.
Are you talking about printed output or on screen? Screen rendering
can vary widely - particularly when comparing operating systems that
are so many years apart.

What font smoothing, anti-aliasing, cleartype, and similar options are
set? Are they the same in your 2K and Vista systems?

If monitor display, are they the same monitor, with the same settings?

Printed output shouldn't vary as much; however you MAY be using
different versions of the same font. Overall spacing should be
identical, even though various factors may affect details of
individual letter shapes.

Thank you very much for your reply. Here I'm referring to the screens not
the printouts. Generally in our applications we are using Arial font (True
Type, Font size -8, Font Style -Regular).

Following are the steps we tried to solve the problem

1.. Installed the same version of Arial font in several Operating systems
(Windows server 2000 and 2008, XP, Vista, Windows 7) and Run the same Visual
Fox pro form.

2.. Run a form created in different programming languages like VB6, VB.net
(Visual Studio 2005) and run it in the above mentioned Operating systems.

Note: Window XP and Windows 2000 Arial font looks identical in appearance,
but the Operating systems like Windows server 2008, Vista, Windows7 fonts
looks different in appearance when compared with Window XP and Windows 2000.
(Width is smaller in characters like H, O)

Unless this is a question about font display in Word, you may not get much
help here since this is a Word NG, but if the issue is Word 2007, there is a
setting that can make a difference: Office Button | Word Options | Advanced:
Display: Optimize character positioning for layout rather than readability.

Also, check the system setting for font smoothing to see if ClearType is
turned on for XP and 2000 systems. It is on by default in Windows 7.

Clear DayHi!!

Thank you very much for all the support given by you all. Finally we are able to fix the problem by changing the windows Clear type settings

In window XP and Windows 2000 by default Clear type is disabled. But however in Windows Vista, Windows server 2008, Windows 7 operating systems Clear type is turned on by default. Once I turned off the clear type, fonts are looks identical as per Windows XP.
