Word 2003 font embedding problem

Under Word 2003 if a user is sent a document with embedded fonts (all
fonts allowing installable embedding) and does not have those fonts on
their computer, when they initially open the document they can see all
fonts. But if they subsequently save the document and reopen, all
embedded fonts not on their system are no longer visible and a
substituted font is used. This does not happen in any previous
versions of word.

Based on my research I am guessing that this is do to the change in
embedded fonts handling microsoft made in Word 2003 whereby they no
longer automatically install embedded fonts that are installable. This
means that documents that are edited and sent along lose their initial
formatting. Is there a work around to this?

Furthermore, doesn't this change make the "installable embedding
allowed" rights of a font basically no different than "view and print"
(or read only) embedding?

Have you tried to make sure that when the document is re-saved the
document that font embedding is turned on? That would be a function of
the current system options, not necessarily part of documents'
properties, so if it's not turned back on, the fonts would no longer
be embedded when the doc is saved.

No. But it DOES make it no different than "editable embedding". The
notion of "installable embedding" is now meaningless, since afaik,
there is NO application that supports it. Note that Adobe
applications never did support it.

I believe font embedding is a document, not a system, option. One of the
drawbacks of the Options dialog in Word 2003 and earlier (remedied to some
extent in 2007, I believe) is that it is often unclear which settings are
for a specific document and which for Word generally.

Right. I was too loose in using the word "system". To be even more
precise, the embedding option settings apply to document within a
specific application.

For instance, MS Wordpad, which can process MS Word .DOC files,
doesn't support font embedding.

Yes I have. It doesn't make a difference. If the embedded fonts are
not on the recipients computer they get lost after the save.

I have to consider this a bug.

Yes I was thinking the same thing.
